Artist Overview
|
|
Argov's personality was determined by three geographical & cultural spheres. The first was the city of Vienna and Berlin - cities which were at their cultural & creative peak at 20th.The second, his adolescence in Palestine during the 30th and the third, Paris, from beginning of 1947. The exhilarating atmosphere and hopes for the future which prevailed in Paris left a strong impression on the young artist, who fitted in well with that world in which he took an active part. Consequently, when Argov returned to Israel, he was the only artist of his generation who had quite naturally absorbed the values of Western culture, which were made up of unusual and felicitous combination of the rational and methodical with a deep sensitivity to aesthetic & spiritual values. Argov upheld these values and was frequently almost the only one in the country who did, but at the same time, was no less active in his efforts to create new local artistic values, for he held that artistic values were universal & could not accept the existence of a discrepancy between local and international art.
